Von Miller is Broncos’ Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee
Linebacker Von Miller is this year’s Broncos nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award, presented annually to a player for their commitment to philanthropy and community projects.
Each team nominates one player. According to the league, new this year will be all 32 players being recognized during the weekend leading up to Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta. The winner will be announced during the NFL Honors show on Saturday, Feb. 2.
The winner will have a total of $500,000 in donations made in their name – – $250,000 apiece to expand Character Playbook (the league and United Way’s digital character education program) and to the charity of his choice. Every nominee will receive a $50,000 donation to the charity of his choice.
All nominees will wear a Man of the Year helmet decal starting this week and for the rest of the season.
Miller was informed of his nomination by former Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning during a ceremony Wednesday at the Pat Bowlen Fieldhouse. Miller’s family was also on hand as a surprise.
In 2012, Miller’s second year in the league, he founded Von’s Vision, which provides low-income children with vision care and eye exams. Miller has raised more than $4.5 million for the program and children from 25 schools and organizations in the Denver area have received free eye care.
Previous Broncos nominees for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award: Cornerback Chris Harris (2017), tight end Virgil Green (2016), safety David Bruton (2015), guard Ben Garland (2014), linebacker Wesley Woodyard (2010-11 and ‘13), guard Zane Beadles (2012), cornerback Champ Bailey (2008-09), cornerback Domonique Foxworth (2007), wide receiver Rod Smith (2004 and ’06), safety John Lynch (2005), linebacker Ian Gold (2003) and wide receiver Ed McCaffrey (2002).
Quarterback John Elway is the only Broncos player to win the award (1992), which was first presented in 1970 and renamed after Payton in 1999.
