Liz Cheney: Dems turned Kavanaugh nomination into ‘evil’ circus; they’re ‘absolutely abhorrent’
Republican Rep. Liz Cheney said Democrats’ behavior toward Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh in recent weeks constituted an “evil” circus unlike anything she’s ever seen in Washington.
The Wyoming lawmaker told Fox News on Thursday that President Trump’s top pick for the high court is a “good man” with a “a good family” who survived a needless political gauntlet. She has known the judge since his days working with the administration of former President George W. Bush.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything, frankly, when you look at what Senate Democrats are doing, as evil, as disgraceful, as cold-hearted in all the years I’ve been in watching politics in this town. I think that what they’ve done is clearly try to unleash a bunch of false charges to destroy Judge Kavanaugh,” she told Fox’s Brian Kilmeade.
Ms. Cheney said that due process for all Americans was at risk if uncorroborated allegations by California college professor Christine Blasey Ford derail the judge’s opportunity to serve on high court.
FBI officials completed an additional background check on Judge Kavanaugh Wednesday evening. The request was made by Republican Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona last week after Ms. Blasey Ford and the judge both testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
“Charges like this can be brought with absolutely no corroboration,” Ms. Cheney continued. “You watch how Sen. [Dianne] Feinstein and the committee Democrats have handled this — it is absolutely abhorrent. They have tried to weaponize false charges of sexual assault, and I think they all ought to be ashamed of themselves. … When you see the kind of absolute circus, you know, when you’ve got women who are in the Senate, the Democrats who are saying that they’re helping to stand up for victims, and then you watch what they did — how Dianne Feinstein handled this claim — it could have been confidentially but that would not have created the media circus they need to attempt to destroy Judge Kavanaugh. It’s evil.”
Democrats claimed throughout the week that the FBI’s additional background check was not sufficient due to its limited scope.
Mr. Flake told reporters Thursday morning that the FBI’s work yielded “no additional corroborating information” to Ms. Blasey Ford’s claims.
A full Senate vote on the judge is expected to happen on Saturday.
