Lakewood Uber shooting, Denver Lyft carjacking suspects charged
A 13-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man have been charged related to a June shooting of an Uber driver in Lakewood, officials announced Thursday.
Quartez Smith, 18, and a juvenile who has not been named have each been charged with numerous felonies, according to a Jefferson and Gilpin Counties District Attorney news release.
Smith has been charged with 15 felony counts including attempted murder, kidnapping, aggravated robbery and eight violent crime counts. The juvenile was charged in juvenile court and has a petition filed against him alleging delinquency, accusing him of six counts plus four counts of violent or aggravated juvenile offender.
Lakewood Police responded to a convenience store at 1110 S. Pierce Street on June 13 to a report of shots fired. Police found 38-year-old Saher Suleiman outside the store with a gunshot wound, the news release said.
Suleiman had parked his car at the gas pumps, filled up and gone inside to pay, the release said. When he returned to his car, Smith and the juvenile were in Suleiman’s backseat and ordered him to drive around and pull over at a side street.
Smith and the juvenile allegedly robbed Suleiman of his phone and wallet. Smith allegedly fired three shots in Suleiman’s back.
Suleiman was able to drive back to the store and call 911.
While Lakewood Police were investigating the case, they learned of an armed robbery and carjacking of a Lyft driver in Denver that happened an hour prior to the Lakewood incident. Investigators determined the vehicle in the Denver carjacking matched the description of the car used by the suspects. That carjacking was also charged in this Jefferson County case, the release said.
A preliminary hearing has been set for Smith for Aug. 14 at 10 a.m. Smith is being held on a $100,000 bond.
